What is methylene blue?
Methylene blue has been around in the medicinal use for over 120 years:
- Antiviral & antibacterial: During the late 19th and early 20th centuries against, it was used as malaria treatment. It is used as a treatment for urinary tract infections (most of which are caused by bacteria rather than viruses). Relevant today: it is being studied in relation to SARS-CoV-2 (it may have a role in the treatment of COVID-19 and in combination with red light, it has been shown to inactivate the virus on N95 respirators and masks).
- Neurodegenerative disorders: It is currently being studied as a potential therapy for a variety of neurodegenerative disorders including mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease…
